Takeaways from the April session

Agile can be used effectively in Non-IT Development Environments

  • When engaging Vendors, communicate how you work (ie iterative approach), Vendors have been receptive and then understand the context of timeframes set. Get them in face to face to discuss work you want done.

    People / Environment

  • When Team members are first introduced to Scrum it is a big change to get used to a Team based approach, not Project manager lead and the changes of ring fenced time for the Scrum, co-location and choosing tasks to work on. As Scrum Master you need to help team members thru this period.
  • Team Norms, such as the daily stand up and using fines to foster a team culture work well.
  • Planning sessions can become loathed, especially when planning 4 weeks work in a day. The Scrum Master needs to try and keep people engaged as the session determines the direction for the sprint.

    A little bit on who we are and what we do.

    Jan started his career in logistics before moving into computer science and project management. After receiving his BSc of Science from Oldenburg University (http://www.uni-oldenburg.de/en/) he worked for a R&D consultancy (http://www.offis.de/) as a consultant and project manager. This is where he got interested in agile principles. He moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2007 where he worked as a project manager and Scrum Master at House of Travel (http://www.hot.co.nz) - and later as acting solution architect and Java Application Development Manager. He has fostered the introduction of agile principles into the organisation and lead the first full time Scrum team at HOT. Jan's interests include software engineering best practices & principles, XP, coding in Java, team building, the problems around self organisation and acceptance of responsibility, and ways to scale Scrum (e.g. Scrum of Scrums).

    Please note that the AUG has ceased to exist due to lack of time on my behalf (I am a Dad now). Below is left for historical reasons only...

    In early 2008 the idea formed to create an informal gathering for all those interested in Agile to get together, share experiences and help each other. The first meeting took place in April 2008 at the Pomeroys Pub with a good turnout and a general interested to keep going.
